Mismatched Socks are Trendy

Let there be conformity where needed, but be creative when you are choosing your socks for the day! Meg Price

When I was a teen I was ridiculed one day for wearing a black sock with a blue one: but it was a fashion no-no back in the day. These days many are seen with mismatched socks as a fashion statement. I myself enjoy the randomness of the look and requested a pair of mismatched socks for the holidays, from a company called Sole Mate, and I love them even at their pricier cost.

It wasn’t until this weekend , when I saw the article on the mismatched sock trend on the front page of the Wall Street Journal, did I realize the extent of this trend.

Cast Iron Cookware is Timeless

While meandering through antique stores this weekend,  I saw so many excellent quality Cast Iron frying pans and pots. These older cookware items hold their quality and value even if you see some rust. And a little known fact about Cast Irons is that it has a beneficial use of adding  iron to your diet.

Just like a well built house with dated wallpaper: the sturdy smooth edges cast iron cookware is like the well built house and the rust is like the dated wallpaper! I adore these pans as they last unlike Teflon which gets scratched and then unusable due to toxins. Mine are decades old and will be handed down for generations to come. Upkeep or Restoring the cast iron is very easy to ensure a rust-free and non-stick surface.

Hunting State Park and Beach Review

photo 3 (11)hunting islandhunt

To me the sea is a continual miracle; The fishes that swim–the rocks–the motion of the waves–the ships, with men in them, What stranger miracles are there?~ Walt Whitman

There have been many times when I’d like an ocean get away but some of the beaches in the south are very commercialized and crowded;  leaving a void of peace and serenity. Hunting Island is a 5,000-acre secluded semitropical barrier island located 15 miles east of Beaufort, South Carolina, USA. Since 1935, it has been classified as a state park.

Hunting Island State Park is a great alternative vacation spot for anyone looking for ocean, history and nature. The nearby town of Beaufort is a great side trip, from the state park, with historical sites, gift shops and antique stores, chartered in 1711. This State Park is a haven of birds and local wildlife, including a light house, a nature building, camping , rental cottages, and beautiful Atlantic ocean beach. When driving into the park you will enter a maritime forest of pines, hard woods and palm trees. Since the ocean is rising, the trees nearest to  the ocean shore have fallen, from the salt water, and are left for aesthetic purposes.  The trees lend a visual aspect different from the traditional sands and water. The white sand beach is not crowded and the warm water has mild waves, with the areas clean and well monitored by state employees.

Colic Calm Product Review

box-bottle-left-high-res

Last November our first grand-daughter was born; she was healthy and beautiful, but from 2 weeks old she suffered from severe Colic. I personally have never experienced a colicky baby before, and was heartbroken to see this baby cry for up to 4 hours at a time. It’s very important to have the miserable baby checked out immediately at the pediatricians, but if the diagnosis is colic don’t despair as there is help.

Once you rule out hunger and other issues such as:

  • Is the nursing mother eating foods that create excess gas, too spicy, or maybe too much dairy?
  • Is the brand of formula causing issues with the baby?
  • The pediatrician can help you with such issues but if it’s colic then this product is for your baby!

The Hoover TwinTank Disinfecting Steam Mop Product Review

My idea of superwoman is someone who scrubs her own floors. —Bette Midler

Washing floors is a chore most of us have to attend to, but efficiency is a constant battle. I’ve tried so many methods over decades; using standard mop and pail, squeegee sponge mops, new spray & mop disposable pads, and even a pole or my foot with towel rags to spread around.  My goal has been to clean the floor but not spread the dirt around while trying to disinfect at the same time. I have finally found the perfect solution for my tile and wood floors; the Steam mop! The Hoover TwinTank Disinfecting Steam Mop comes with reusable 3 pads and an attachment for carpet stains. There are 2 attached canisters, one for water and the other for solution. Of course you can just use water if you prefer as it also has a steam feature to disinfect. The settings range from steam only which is perfect for wood floors, to deep cleaning for tile and linoleum. For my wood floors I use Bona wood floor cleaner in the solution canister with light steam so the wood doesn’t get saturated but properly cleaned. For the tile kitchen and bathroom floors I use Bona tile and linoleum cleaner or natural cleaner such as vinegar in the solution tank-works great! Read more

Teflon versus Enamel Cookware

5010695794_587fee4bf9

Teflon definitely seems to be the best for non- stick properties but after reading a study in the  Human Reproduction Journal I question the safety of using products coated in Teflon. Unscratched Teflon pans can be used safely under 500 degrees but after 600 degrees significant decomposition of the coating will occur. A study on non stick coatings, by the Environmental Working Group (EWG),  stated  “non- stick pans could reach 700 degrees Fahrenheit in as little as three to five minutes, releasing fifteen toxic gases and chemicals, including two carcinogens.”  If you are using Teflon pans that are scratched, decomposing or chipping in any way~ throw them out!

Teflon is meant to be used  below 500 degrees to avoid chemical fumes and breakdown of the material coating. This explains why my Teflon frying pans never lasted more than a year without breaking down. Since then I have relied on stainless steel for all my food preparations but miss the non- stick properties. Recently I purchased 2 items that I am thrilled with. Read more

Garden Treasures Greenhouse product review

photo (24)

Even though spingtime is here, the weather does not reflect the warm conditions for new plants to thrive in this cold. Since my large greenhouse was left with the sale of my  other mountain home, I needed a fast alternative to start my spring garden here. When there is not the space availability to have a large greenhouse structure – an alternative is the Greenhouse Garden with shelves by Greenhouse Treasures. This greenhouse can be easily kept on a well lit porch; using not much of the space.

I purchased mine at Lowes for about $39. which was a good price for the kit. The assembly process was very easy and completed in about 20 minutes without tools.

With greenhouses the main objective is to keep plants warm through solar energy/heat. It takes only a few minutes for light to come in through the clear plastic or glass to warm up the area. The greenhouse should be able to store heat for plants to thrive even if temperatures are cold outside. As the greenhouse absorbs the sunlight it releses the thermal energy which warms the plants, dirt and water. Greenhouses need to be a closed environment so the temperature can be maintained throughout the day; avoiding any cold outside air to seep in. The temperatures, inside a greenhouse, may fluctuate but very gradually in a closed environment. Read more
